Dreamgirls follows the path from obscurity to superstardom of the Dreams, an all-girl Motown group based on real-life acts such as the Supremes and the Shirelles. Things take a turn when the trio’s agent replaces the vocal powerhouse Effie with the softer Deena, both onstage and in a behind-the-scenes romance. Dreamgirls highlights the ups and downs of life in show business and the intersection of race and popular music amid the turbulence of the civil rights era. It also features the competing forces of love, pride and ambition.
